Master the use of positive and negative space to create your own holiday stamps that you can print over and over again! This artform has been growing in popularity again with the rise of social media. You may have stumbled across block-printed calendars, cards, and t-shirts on your feed. If you see something you love, keep it as inspiration! In this workshop, we will be focusing on creating those charming touches that make the holidays full of love. Customize and create holiday cards, wrapping paper, and tags to add that cherry on top of your gifts this season! Print in black and white, or in colour! Block printing is a method of printmaking involving carving a relief image usually into wood or linoleum. While Woodblock printing is a difficult and ancient method of printmaking that was popularized in East Asia, linoleum began to be used in the 1890s in Europe as an alternative and less labor intensive medium. This class will focus on the linoleum cutting method. In this class you will learn how to: ~ Create an image that will translate clearly to a print ~ Transfer your image onto a linoleum and rubber block ~ Safely carve your blocks ~ Properly ink your blocks ~ Print on paper ~ Clean and maintain your blocks ~ Source supplies and recreate this workshop at home At the end of the class you will take home: ~ Multiple test paper prints ~ 1 Set of cards with envelopes (print in studio or at home) ~ 12 Small gift tags ~ 2 sheets of kraft wrapping paper for printing ~ One reusable carved linoleum block, one carved rubber block, and one carved eraser that you can use to print your image at home ~ Resources for further exploration into the world of block-printing All supplies and materials are included in the cost of the workshop. You will be asked to design your own image for printing. You can draw something before the workshop, during the workshop, or feel free to bring some printed images in with you. All discovery workshops are adaptable for beginners and those with more advanced skills and experience.
